Anyone who has ever watched some post-apocalyptic survivalist drama in which the heroine retains perfect eyebrows, or some TV series set in the middle ages wherein all the ladies appear rigorously waxed, will appreciate what’s going down on French Twitter right now.

A new hashtag, #LesPrincessesOntDesPoils – princesses have hair – began trending on Tuesday thanks to 16-year-old Adele Labo. The hashtag encourages women to post pictures of their natural body hair as a reminded to the world that they do indeed have it, despite a societal stigma so enormous that we’ve come to think of hairlessness as just a woman’s natural state. Lado’s hashtag points out that the opposite is true. It’s prompted an outpouring of pictures of women flaunting their gloriously fuzzy armpits and legs.

The teen, who maintains a blog with pictures of her body hair, says she’s been bullied and harassed for refusing to remove or hide it. #LesPrincessesOntDesPoils, which she created to fight the stigma, has been used more than 25,000 times.
