Hilary Duff is aware that all of her “relationships have been in the public eye.”
The Younger star, 29, opened up to costar Nico Tortorella on his podcast, The Love Bomb, on Tuesday and discussed a variation of topics, including divorce, marriage, love and monogamy.
“I don’t know any other way until now, which is obviously, I’m divorced, and it’s never seemed harder to have a life outside of my relationship. It just seems scarier than ever because of how much attention celebrities get because of their personal life now and how much focus is on that and how much one person can say one thing and how much impact it can have. It’s crazy,” Duff told the radio host.
At the age of 19, Duff met former professional hockey player Mike Comrie, whom she married three years later in 2010 at the age of 22. In 2012, the couple welcomed their first and only child together — son Luca Cruz — but divorced earlier this year after six years of marriage together.
“When we were deciding to get married, I was totally down — I felt totally ready. I had already been working as an adult since I was 12 years old, so 22 doesn’t seem that crazy to get married,” Duff said of getting married in her early 20s, but added of her divorce, “I wasn’t shamed because I got a divorce. It was a big step to take and it was a lot of considering, obviously a little human.”
Although Duff is no longer married to Comrie, the two are on amicable terms — and she considers him one of her closest friends.
“It is a sacred thing, obviously, it’s something to be taken very seriously. I was so happy to be married and I think that I was in a very successful marriage for a long time. I never want to have any negative — I mean, that’s hard to say no negative feelings — but we got together based on love and we separated in a very loving way. I can’t imagine going through that process with anyone but him and he continues to be my very good friend. That’s honestly speaking from my heart,” she said. “I think we handled it very consciously and with a lot of love, but marriage is sacred and marriage is not for everyone. Marriage is work, marriage is really hard and everyone’s like, ‘well are you going to get married again?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’ ”
The mother of one, who is currently dating her personal trainer Jason Walsh, is open to considering marriage again in the future, but she doesn’t “feel the need” to tie the knot in the future.
“I don’t feel the need to get married again. As much as I was ready and excited, you’re like, ‘Oh, next step. We get married.’ That is the traditional person that I’m talking about that’s inside of me or however I was raised,” she said. “I don’t feel the need. I got to have the experience and it was awesome. I guess if it mattered to someone else that much, I would consider it.”
Asked where she stands on the subject of monogamy, Duff said, “There we go with the tradition again. I’m kind of traditional. But I get it. I get that it’s hard to be with one person. You get really comfortable and —I think I’m too much of a jealous person,” she admitted. “I’m not a jealous person by nature, but I don’t think I want my man sleeping with someone else. And I understand boredom or not connecting after however many years of marriage or a relationship, but that’s where the work comes in. I feel like I’d have a really hard time with that.”
Looking to the future, the mother of one has hopes and goals that she’d like to accomplish, but she doesn’t have a specific timeline for them — and admitted that she feels a sense of fullness in her life.
“I have dreams and aspirations, but I never really have been one of those people that has set dates like I’m this age and this, this and this needs to happen because that’s just not really realistic,” said Duff. “I have a kid and my life is very full, so I feel blessed and lucky, but there’s still things I want to do and experiences I want to have and maybe more kids, but it’s not like it needs to happen at this time and I need to be married. All those pressures need to go away.”
